A 2024 survey has found that 61% of Singaporean employees felt burnt out by work, adding that 44% of the respondents were unhappy with their mental health. According to the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), the key indicators of burnout are (i) feeling mentally or physically exhausted by work; (ii) feeling cynical about one’s work or colleagues; and, (iii) feeling inefficient or inadequate at one's work.
Some insights from the National Youth Mental Health Study published in 2024 have shown that around 27% of youths aged between 15 and 35 are facing severe to extremely severe anxiety symptoms2. Out of all the respondents, anxiety was found to be more prevalent in women than men, as well as those who were unemployed or who have a low monthly income.
Around 14.9% of the respondents to the National Youth Mental Health Study3 were also observed to exhibit severe and extremely severe symptoms of depression. There was a similar prevalence of depression among both men and women, but other factors, such as the lack of job security and low socio-economic status, were associated with increased vulnerability to depressive symptoms.
Singaporeans have been reported to be more stressed than the global average, indicating an upward trend in stress-related studies in recent years. A 2023 study reported that 87% of Singaporeans felt stressed that year, with 16% responding that they felt the stress was not manageable4. In addition to being linked to low mental resilience, stress can also affect one’s physical health, potentially making it easier to fall sick or prolong recovery.
According to a 2022 Workmonitor survey, 87% of Singaporeans expressed a desire for a career counselling session to support better work-life balance and career advancement5. Commonly requested by those in the beginning stages of their career, as well as those who feel ‘stuck’, career counsellors can give advice and pointers to help clients gain more clarity about their unique situations and make better-informed decisions.
Self-esteem was identified as one of the factors affecting mental resilience, as reported by the National Youth Mental Health Study in 20246. Respondents with lower self-esteem were found to have a higher chance of showing symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress, as well as have a smaller social circle and experience lower levels of social support7.

As part of the Activation Programme, we provide more than just access to our ThoughtFull professionals through an app. We partner with your HR team to actively support employee wellbeing, offering on-site or virtual launches, webinars on a wide range of topics, critical incident and stress management, on-site booths or counselling support as needed, and a 24/7 hotline for your employees in crisis, providing immediate assistance when it's needed most.
Our goal is to create a comprehensive support system that promotes mental wellbeing and engagement across your organisation.
ThoughtFull Insights provides HR teams with actionable data to optimise the organisation's mental health programme. Yes, we have conducted a study on the efficacy of text-based coaching, and it shows improvement in symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. In addition to this study, we've partnered with several private organisations to develop whitepapers like Project Cheria to demonstrate the benefits of using the ThoughtFull platform. We are continuously trying to expand our research efforts.
While asynchronous text-based coaching has proven to be effective, we note that not everybody will be compatible with online therapy and digital platforms. If you are unsure whether online counselling sessions are the right choice for you, we encourage you to take your time, explore your options, and choose a format that best suits your personal needs.
